Background of the study
Urban art forms in Nigeria—such as music, graffiti, and digital art—serve as dynamic expressions of cultural identity. Nigerian Pidgin, with its colloquial and adaptable nature, is a popular medium in urban creative spaces. Artists use Pidgin to convey social commentary, humor, and cultural pride, bridging traditional values with contemporary urban life (Adamu, 2023). The language’s fluid syntax and vibrant vocabulary allow for inventive expression that resonates with diverse audiences. However, as urban art evolves in a globalized digital landscape, there is a risk that commercialization may dilute the cultural authenticity embedded in Nigerian Pidgin. This study assesses how Nigerian Pidgin functions as a vehicle for cultural identity in urban art forms, analyzing visual art, music lyrics, and social media content. Through interviews with artists and cultural critics, as well as content analysis of urban artworks, the research aims to explore the interplay between language, identity, and modern urban culture (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
While Nigerian Pidgin is celebrated for its expressiveness in urban art, commercialization and globalization may compromise its role as a genuine marker of cultural identity (Adamu, 2023). Inconsistent use and over-simplification in media representations risk eroding the language’s rich expressive potential. This study seeks to identify the challenges that urban artists face in maintaining cultural authenticity through Pidgin, and how these challenges affect the expression of cultural identity.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze the role of Nigerian Pidgin in urban art.
  2. To identify challenges in maintaining cultural authenticity.
  3. To propose strategies to preserve cultural identity in urban creative expressions.

Research questions:

  1. How is Nigerian Pidgin used in urban art forms?
  2. What challenges impact cultural identity expression?
  3. What measures can safeguard linguistic authenticity?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the creative use of Nigerian Pidgin in urban art, offering insights that will help artists and cultural promoters preserve and enhance cultural identity through language (Adamu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to urban art forms in major Nigerian cities; excludes rural expressions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Cultural identity: The sense of belonging to a particular culture.
  • Urban art forms: Contemporary artistic expressions in city environments.
  • Nigerian Pidgin: A widely used Nigerian creole language.
